$10-million boost for housing and infrastructure innovation

The federal government has announced a $10 million investment in 18 applied research projects to tackle Canada’s housing and infrastructure challenges.

Highlights include Queen’s University’s exploration of 3D concrete printing for durable construction and Winnipeg-based 5468796 Architecture’s strategy to utilize underused NGO assets for affordable housing. In Vancouver, Light House Sustainability is examining the feasibility of relocating homes to Northern communities, addressing housing shortages in underserved areas. Quebec City’s Vivre en Ville is developing tools to help municipalities repurpose urban spaces like parking lots for housing while reducing urban sprawl.

“These important projects will support innovative solutions that will help build more critical infrastructure and housing, faster across Canada,” said Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities.

The funding is part of the Research and Knowledge Initiative, launched in 2019 to enhance decision-making in public infrastructure.
