Walmart Tests Text Shopping

Walmart’s global tech team and Store No8 – its retail development arm – are beta testing text-to-shop capabilities in select locations. It is currently trying to identify when and how customers prefer a more conversational experience and plans to make the service more widely available in the future. The retailer already offers voice shopping and hopes the text service will be more personalized by understanding customers’ preferences. “The advantage of conversational commerce is that customers can communicate with Walmart the way they communicate with friends and family,” says Dominique Essig, vice-president of conversational commerce, Store No8. “Let’s face it, we’ll never stop trying to do a million things at once. Our hope is that conversational commerce can help ease the stress of the never-ending to-do list.”
