Wholesale Sales Decline

Wholesale sales fell 0.5 per cent to $79.8 billion in April from March, says Statistics Canada. Sales fell in five of seven subsectors comprising more than three-quarters of total wholesale activity in Canada. The miscellaneous merchant wholesaler subsector declined 3.4 per cent to $11.5 billion. The building material and supplies merchant subsector dropped 1.4 per cent to $14 billion, with the lumber, millwork, hardware, and other building supplies industry accounting for the bulk of the decline with sales down 3.8 per cent to $7.5 billion. Six provinces reported lower sales in April accounting for 86 per cent of the national value with Quebec (2.1 per cent to $14.7 billion) and Ontario (0.4 per cent to $40.4 billion) posting the highest declines from the previous month.
