Alberta government proposes sweeping changes to construction and condominium laws
The Alberta government has introduced the Service Alberta Statutes Amendment Act, 2024, aimed at simplifying life for Albertans. The proposed changes affect the Condominium Property Act, the Prompt Payment and Construction Lien Act (PPCLA), and the Public Works Act.
Key changes include the creation of a Condominium Dispute Resolution Tribunal for affordable conflict resolution, standardized prompt payment rules across all construction projects, and improved consumer protection in new condominium constructions. The Act also clarifies the PPCLA adjudication process and addresses ambiguities around project completion and payment timelines.
These amendments reflect feedback from Albertans and aim to enhance fairness, transparency, and efficiency in the construction and condominium sectors.
