Alberta Innovates funds agricultural research with new grants

Alberta Innovates has announced new funding to develop technologies benefiting food producers and opening markets for cannabis in skincare and medicine. Grants have been awarded to research teams at the University of Alberta, the University of Calgary, and Calgary-based LWR Technologies to support Alberta’s agricultural sector. These projects aim to develop cost-saving technologies and increase crop yields.

With 52 million acres of farmland, Alberta’s agriculture producers have market access to 1.5 billion people through Canada’s trade agreements. Since 2019, Alberta Innovates has provided $17.9 million in funding to 67 recipients for agriculture and food innovation, with a current project value of $57.6 million.

Mark Summers, associate vice president of Alberta Innovates stated, “By funding research and development in Alberta, we’re supporting technology development that will benefit communities within the province, across the country, and around the world.”
