B.C. extends deadline for local governments to amend zoning bylaws

The Province of British Columbia has granted 21 local governments extensions to amend zoning bylaws and upgrade infrastructure to comply with new housing legislation. This move allows more time for the communities to implement changes aimed at increasing housing options such as row homes, triplexes, and townhouses.

Under the Province’s “Homes for People” action plan, local governments were initially required to update zoning bylaws by June 30, 2024. The updates are designed to allow for a minimum of one secondary suite or multiple dwelling units, depending on population density and transit access.

As of September 2024, 172 out of 188 local governments in B.C. have adopted the legislation, covering over 91% of communities. The Province will continue to assess progress to ensure more diverse housing options are made available for middle-income families.
