B.C. tightens standards and protections for international students
British Columbia has announced Phase 2 of its International Education Framework, enhancing standards and protections for international students. Key changes to the Education Quality Assurance (EQA) designation mandate that post-secondary institutions must conduct at least 50% of programs in person, have appropriate facilities, and support international students adequately. The new EQA code of practice ensures clear marketing, accountability for education agents, tuition transparency, and student health and safety.
Private degree-granting institutions must align degree programs with labor market needs, manage enrollments properly, and face increased fees. Private training institutions will adhere to higher program standards, better student protections, and face stricter regulations against high-pressure sales tactics. Non-compliance may result in losing the EQA designation, preventing these institutions from enrolling international students.
