Bay St. George YMCA receives $2.3 million for expansion and energy upgrades
The Bay St. George YMCA is set to undergo significant upgrades following a $2.3 million investment from the federal government through the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) program. The announcement was made by Minister Gudie Hutchings, mayor Tom Rose, and YMCA operations director Cheryl Johnson.
The project includes a 3,100-square-foot expansion, which will provide new multi-purpose space for community use. In addition, the facility’s hardwood gym floor will be refurbished, and accessibility will be improved. The renovations will allow for increased access to indoor court time and community programs.
Energy efficiency will also be enhanced, with the removal of asbestos cladding, the installation of new insulation, siding, HVAC units, and a solar-powered lighting system. These changes are expected to reduce energy consumption costs and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
