BILD calls for action on Toronto housing crisis
The Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) urged Toronto’s Executive Committee to implement a more extensive approach to address escalating housing costs and project delays in the city. BILD argued that Toronto’s current proposal, “Expanding Incentives for Purpose-Built Rental Housing,” falls short in alleviating the ongoing crisis, leaving 29,000-37,000 rental and condominium units stalled.
“If the city’s own housing projects, built on city land, with federal subsidies cannot proceed without development charge and tax relief, it is no wonder that market units are struggling with costs to build, which is in turn acting as a barrier to adding the housing Toronto requires,” said BILD president and CEO Dave Wilkes.
BILD emphasized that without a “comprehensive housing strategy,” Toronto’s housing shortfall could worsen significantly by 2030.
