Calgary students taught construction skills in new program
Starting this fall, Calgary elementary students will be introduced to the construction industry through a new educational initiative. The Calgary Construction Association’s “Honour The Work” program aims to integrate skilled trades education into classrooms, targeting Grades 1 to 6. The program features STEAMS kits—Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math, and Skills—containing hands-on activities, lesson plans, building materials, and resources highlighting skilled trades.
Originally launched in Ontario, the initiative addresses the current construction sector’s labor shortage. Bill Black, president and CEO of the Calgary Construction Association, emphasized the program’s role in preparing future industry professionals.
Supported by Procore Technologies, the curriculum will be implemented in 850 classrooms across the Calgary Board of Education and Calgary Catholic School District this school year.
