Canada and Saskatchewan announce $47.7 million investment to combat wildfires

The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan are collaborating to combat the increasing threat of wildfires during the 2024 season. With forecasts predicting above-average wildfire activity in Saskatchewan, the Federal Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Jonathan Wilkinson, and Saskatchewan Corrections, Policing, and Public Safety Minister, Paul Merriman, announced a joint investment of $47.7 million over five years.

This investment includes $44.8 million for the purchase of essential firefighting equipment under the Fighting and Managing Wildfires in a Changing Climate Program. Additionally, $2.9 million will be allocated to expand the FireSmart Program, enhancing wildfire prevention and mitigation efforts in Saskatchewan.

These initiatives aim to protect communities, improve firefighting capabilities, and strengthen resource sharing across Canada. The funding continues efforts to address wildfire threats and support public safety.
