Canada launches two initiatives to tackle housing crisis
Minister of Housing Sean Fraser announced two new initiatives today aimed at increasing Canada’s housing supply by enhancing infrastructure and supporting homebuilding innovation.
The Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund’s (CHIF) new $1 billion direct delivery stream will provide municipalities and Indigenous communities with funding to improve essential infrastructure like water and waste management, facilitating new housing projects. Communities with populations over 30,000 will be required to support construction of at least four housing units. Eligible applicants can now apply online.
Additionally, the Regional Homebuilding Innovation Initiative (RHII) will invest $50 million over two years to advance innovative homebuilding methods, including modular housing and 3D printing, through Canada’s Regional Development Agencies.
“These programs are just some of the ways we are partnering with others across the country to ensure that all Canadians have a safe and affordable place to call home,” Fraser said.
