Coaching for success: Key to employee retention

Employees often leave not because of pay or benefits, but because of poor management, John Tschohl, president of the Service Quality Institute, noted in his blog. Citing a Gallup survey, Tschohl highlighted that 50% of US employees quit to flee poor management, with a mere 30% feeling engaged at work, leaving 70% disengaged.

Tschohl noted the pivotal role of managers in making sure their employees “feel loved, valued, and appreciated” in the workplace. “If you want your employees to enjoy their work, become more productive, and stay with you and your company, it’s critical that you take a good look at how you treat them,” he said.

Essential elements Tschohl highlighted include timely acknowledgment, sincere praise, and continuous professional development, suggesting public acknowledgment to amplify its impact. While not all employees respond to coaching, Tschohl advised focusing on those receptive to improvement.
