Federal Government invests in energy-efficient supportive housing in Whitehorse

The Federal Government has committed over $14 million to enhance energy efficiency in new supportive housing in Whitehorse, specifically at The Hearth, formerly known as the Coast High Country Inn.

Located at 4051 4th Avenue, the facility will undergo renovations to provide 67 affordable units for women, youth, Indigenous Yukoners, and individuals facing or at risk of homelessness. The funding includes $16.4 million from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and $3.3 million from Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC).

Renovations will focus on energy efficiency, with upgrades such as improved building envelope, heat recovery ventilators, and solar panels. Additionally, $5 million from the AHIF funding will support innovative programming for residents.

The Safe at Home Society will own and operate the facility, which is expected to be completed by 2026.
