Federal investment aims to improve energy efficiency in Canadian buildings
Canada’s buildings sector, the third-largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, is set to benefit from a federal investment of $4.3 million for five projects aimed at deep energy retrofits.
Parliamentary secretary Julie Dabrusin announced the funding, which includes over $2 million for EnviroCentre’s project in Gloucester’s Carver Place neighborhood. This initiative aims to enhance the local building sector’s capacity for retrofitting social housing, ultimately saving families money while improving energy efficiency.
The funded projects include the replacement of traditional furnaces with electric heat pumps and upgrades to insulation and ventilation systems. Additional funding will support retrofits in Atlantic Canada, Indigenous communities, and Ontario’s social housing.
“By retrofitting buildings across the country, we can make communities more resilient to climate-related impacts while reducing emissions and utility bills for Canadians,” Dabrusin stated.
