FortisBC urges safe digging practices as summer construction concludes
As summer construction winds down, FortisBC Energy Inc. is urging British Columbians to prioritize safety when digging or excavating. With a rise in end-of-summer projects, FortisBC emphasizes contacting BC 1 Call before breaking ground to prevent damage to underground utility lines.
From January to July 2024, FortisBC and BC 1 Call saw a 4% increase in locate ticket requests, with an 8% spike during peak construction months. Despite the rise in tickets, nearly 90% of damage incidents stem from not following proper safety procedures.
“By adhering to safe digging practices, such as hand digging near marked lines, individuals can help avoid damaging underground utility lines and ensure the safety of themselves and others,” said Jimmy Yip, FortisBC’s damage prevention manager.
Residents are reminded to request location information at least three days before digging and to avoid using powered equipment near gas lines.
