Gardening More Popular Than Ever
Gardening has become one of the most popular hobbies in North America, with 55 per cent of households actively gardening, says a report from Bigger Garden, a website that offers tips for gardeners. One of the main drivers of this increase in popularity has been the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw people take up gardening as a way to pass the time and stay productive while at home. Not only has gardening provided an enjoyable and fulfilling pastime, but it has also helped to alleviate some of the financial stress faced by families by reducing grocery bills. Gardeners have increased spending on outdoor tools and hydroponic kits for indoor growing. As well, online sales in the category doubled during the pandemic. Gen Z represents a substantial 44 per cent of the new pandemic gardeners, with Millennials making up almost a third. Baby Boomers are gardening less than they were a few years ago, down around 10 per cent as they age into downsizing their homes and gardening space.
