Governments fund affordable housing in Whitehorse
The federal and territorial governments have committed over $3.5 million to Project 1096, a new affordable housing initiative in the Whistle Bend neighborhood. The development will feature 32 energy-efficient condominium units with one- to three-bedroom layouts, offering yards or balconies.
Led by the Northern Community Land Trust, the project is designed to remain affordable permanently, with resale prices capped at inflation-adjusted purchase prices. Homes will be sold at over 30% below market value to individuals and families earning less than 80% of the median household income.
Funding includes $2.4 million from federal programs, $1 million from the Yukon Housing Corporation, and $60,000 from the City of Whitehorse. Construction is set to complete in late 2025.
