Manufacturing Sales Climb

Manufacturing sales rose 4.1 per cent to $73.9 billion in January, says Statistics Canada. Sixteen of 21 industries saw sales growth compared to December 2022, led by the petroleum and coal product segment which increased by 10.1 per cent to $10.3 billion, and motor vehicles sales which rose by 13.4 per cent to $4.8 billion. Manufacturing sales increased in seven provinces in January. Notably, Alberta sales climbed by 11.5 per cent to $9.7 billion, while Ontario saw sales grow by 5.2 per cent to $32.6 billion. Saskatchewan had sales fall nine per cent to $2.2 billion due to a reduction in sales of chemical products. Production in the aerospace product and parts industry declined 11.2 per cent to $1.6 billion. Sales in constant dollars were up 3.8 per cent in January as higher volumes played a significant role in gains on a current dollar basis. The Industrial Product Price Index rose 0.4 per cent in January.
