Mercier to gain new housing for residents with intellectual disabilities
Construction has commenced on 19 housing units for individuals with intellectual disabilities in Mercier, Quebec, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). The $9.3 million project, led by Chez-nous solidaire, received funding from the governments of Quebec and Canada, and the City of Mercier.
Quebec is contributing nearly $4.2 million, including $1.8 million from the Société d'habitation du Québec (SHQ), while Canada has added $3.7 million through the Canada-Quebec Rapid Housing Initiative. The City of Mercier is providing $427,500.
Officials highlighted the importance of these units for vulnerable residents. “The federal government will continue to work hard toward ensuring that everyone in Quebec and across Canada has a safe and stable place to call home,” said the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities.
