New affordable housing secured in New Westminster
New Hope Community Services Society has acquired an 11-unit building in New Westminster, ensuring long-term affordability for current and future tenants, particularly refugee families. Funded by the Rental Protection Fund, which provided a $2 million capital contribution, the property will remain 39% below market rates. The acquisition offers essential stability for tenants, including expanded services for refugees with children.
“A secure, affordable home provides peace of mind and stability to many people – especially for refugee families who need that security in times of transition,” said Raj Chouhan, MLA for Burnaby-New Westminster.
New Hope plans renovations, including converting one-bedroom units into two-bedroom suites and enhancing common areas for community-building activities. This acquisition adds to the Rental Protection Fund’s broader effort to secure affordable homes across B.C., contributing to the stability of over 1,500 homes in the region this fall.
