New DTES building to offer affordable homes and health services
Plans for a new community building in the Downtown Eastside (DTES) are advancing, incorporating additional supportive and affordable homes connected to health and social services. Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing, noted the need to phase out single-room occupancies (SROs) over time.
Initially proposed in 2018 for 75 units, the project at 301 E Hastings St. has expanded to include three adjacent properties and a land donation, aiming for up to eight storeys with below-market and supportive homes. Adrian Dix, Minister of Health, highlighted the importance of safe, supportive housing.
Vancouver Coastal Health Authority is consulting with the community on offered services. The project is part of a $19-billion provincial investment in housing, aiming to provide nearly 80,000 homes, including 2,500 supportive units in Vancouver. The redevelopment is scheduled for application in fall 2024.
