Ontario housing trends shift toward smaller condos
New data from the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) has revealed shifting housing trends across Ontario, highlighting changes in home sizes and types. Once dominated by single-detached houses, which made up 95% of new builds in the 1950s, condominiums have surged in popularity. By 2020, nearly 41% of new homes were condos, surpassing single-detached homes at 38%.
The trend towards larger homes continues, with single-detached houses growing by 44% in size since the 1970s. Meanwhile, condominiums have shrunk by 32%, reflecting rising construction and land costs. Notably, regional differences show larger homes in municipalities like King and North York, while smaller condos are common in cities like Kingston and Gravenhurst.
