Ontario introduces new land use clause to protect industrial zones
The Government of Ontario has unveiled a new land use protection clause aimed at safeguarding industrial operations amid the province’s ambitious housing development plans. The updated Provincial Planning Statement now mandates that any new development within 300 metres of employment areas must avoid or mitigate negative impacts on these zones.
Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) praised the move, attributing it to their ongoing advocacy.
“This latest change is a significant step forward in ensuring Ontario remains a prime location for manufacturing investments,” said CME President & CEO Dennis Darby.
“The updated Provincial Planning Statement strikes a balance, supporting residential growth while ensuring manufacturers have the space they need to grow and thrive.”
Ontario’s plan to build 1.5 million homes by 2031 will now include measures to protect critical manufacturing spaces.
