Ontario invests $1 billion in hydroelectric energy refurbishment

The Ontario government announced a $1 billion investment in refurbishing eight hydroelectric generating stations in Eastern Ontario. This initiative, part of the Powering Ontario’s Growth plan, aims to secure 1,617 megawatts of clean electricity—enough to power 1.6 million homes. The project will create 500 well-paying jobs and provide reliable, affordable energy.

“Today's investment extends the life of these stations for decades, supporting Ontario’s growing electricity needs,” said Energy Minister Stephen Lecce.

The refurbishment, set to increase production by 100 gigawatt hours annually, is essential for meeting rising energy demands while opposing the federal carbon tax. This move is part of a broader strategy to expand Ontario’s clean energy infrastructure.
