Ontario invests $17 million to train 36,000 Northern workers in key sectors
The Ontario government is investing nearly $17 million through the Skills Development Fund (SDF) to train over 36,000 workers in Northern Ontario for careers in mining, construction, energy, and forestry. This investment aims to address regional labor shortages and enhance Ontario’s position as a leader in these sectors.
Premier Doug Ford highlighted the collaboration with First Nations, labor unions, and local employers to ensure workers gain skills for well-paying jobs. “We’re giving workers in Northern Ontario the support and investments they need to find good-paying jobs in in-demand careers,” said the Premier.
The funding supports various projects, including new training centers and program expansions, such as Science North’s $3.27 million facility for youth training and Agnico Eagle’s $10 million initiative in partnership with First Nations for mining careers.
The SDF has now invested nearly $117 million in Northern Ontario, with applications for the latest round of funding open until October 4, 2024.
