Ontario low-carbon building marks milestone in sustainable construction
CarbiCrete, Aecon, and Lafarge Canada have unveiled a low-carbon building project at Aecon’s Innovation and Training Centre in Holland Landing, Ontario. The project, completed on December 6, marks the first structure built using CarbiCrete’s cement-free concrete masonry units (CMUs) alongside Lafarge’s ECOpact® low-carbon concrete. This building will serve as a storage facility for Aecon’s trainees.
The collaboration aims to reduce the construction industry’s carbon footprint. CarbiCrete’s decarbonized CMUs have a carbon footprint 20 times lower than the industry average.
“The use of low-carbon concrete represents the single greatest opportunity to reduce embodied carbon in the built environment,” said CarbiCrete CEO Jacob Homiller.
In early 2025, CarbiCrete’s products will be commercially available in Ontario through Canal Block, a masonry producer.
