PEI increases climate challenge fund to support local projects

Prince Edward Island’s government has expanded its Climate Challenge Fund, increasing it by over $450,000 for 2024, with support from Canada’s Climate Action and Awareness Fund. This brings annual funding to $1 million.

Islanders are working on 16 initiatives to address climate change, including fuel cell development, home resiliency improvements, and educational programs. The fund supports efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance carbon sequestration, and foster climate research and public outreach.

Since 2020, 76 projects have been funded across PEI, involving municipalities, First Nations, businesses, and academic institutions. Interested organizations can apply for the next round of funding online.

PEI’s minister of environment, energy, and climate action, Steven Myers, emphasized the province’s commitment to climate solutions, while Canada’s minister of environment, Steven Guilbeault, highlighted the importance of community-based actions in building a cleaner, resilient economy.
