PEI tops ranking for energy efficiency and sustainability

Prince Edward Island has been recognized as a leader in energy efficiency, according to the latest Canadian Energy Efficiency Scorecard. The report highlights the province’s top ranking in supporting energy efficiency upgrades for low-income households. PEI also earned second place overall for energy efficiency programs, up from fourth in 2022 and seventh in 2019.

“Energy efficiency not only benefits the environment, but also significantly reduces energy costs for residents, taking a small step in making life more affordable,” said Environment, Energy, and Climate Action Minister Gilles Arsenault.

More than 12,800 free heat pumps have been installed for qualifying residents, cutting emissions by 26,000 tons and saving 12 million liters of heating oil.

The report also lauded PEI’s efforts to reduce transportation emissions, with the province ranking first in Canada for electric vehicle charging ports per capita and fourth for electric vehicle registrations as a percentage of total vehicle sales.
