Prince Edward Island adjusts regulations to boost housing density
The Government of Prince Edward Island has amended its subdivision and development regulations to allow for greater housing density in rural areas. Under the new Planning Act provisions, the requirement for developers to dedicate 10% of a subdivision’s total area to open space will now apply only to developments exceeding 20 lots, rather than the previous threshold of five.
Housing, Land and Communities Minister Rob Lantz stated that this adjustment aims to expedite affordable housing development by reducing costs and increasing the number of units available. The regulation changes, effective August 1, 2024, impact unincorporated areas and municipalities without official plans and bylaws, facilitating a balance between housing goals and appropriate use of open spaces.
