Princeton professor transforms home into sustainable living lab

Forrest Meggers, a professor at Princeton University, is transforming his home into a model of sustainable living. The ongoing renovation features a geothermal heating and cooling system, which taps into deep underground water for energy efficiency.

Meggers, known for his “Designing Sustainable Systems” course, is testing cutting-edge green technologies alongside traditional methods. His home also incorporates reclaimed wood, wool insulation, and a unique water recycling system.

The project has faced challenges, including a $40,000 budget overrun and some design compromises with his wife, Georgette Stern. Despite occasional setbacks, the home now offers energy-efficient solutions like passive solar shading and an innovative cooling system.

Once completed, it will include solar panels and water bladders for off-grid living.
