Retail Sales Up In May
Retail sales increased 2.2 per cent to $62.2 billion in May on a month-over-month basis, says a report by Statistics Canada. Sales were up in eight of 11 subsectors, representing 86.6 per cent of retail trade. In terms of core retail, the largest decline came from miscellaneous store retailers (6.7 per cent). Receipts at building material and garden equipment and supplies dealers were down for a second consecutive month at a 1.7 per cent decrease. Despite the decline, activity remains high with sales up 5.7 per cent. Retail sales were up in all provinces led by Quebec at 3.4 per cent, followed by Ontario and Alberta both at 1.9 per cent.
