Saskatchewan bill to keep carbon tax off home heating

Saskatchewan’s government has introduced new legislation aimed at keeping the federal carbon tax off home heating. Minister Jeremy Harrison announced the SaskEnergy (Carbon Tax Fairness for Families) Amendment Act, 2024, which will extend the exemption on carbon tax for home heating through 2025. This move fulfills a promise made during the provincial election to protect families from rising heating costs.

The change ensures that Saskatchewan residents will save approximately $480 in 2025 as the carbon tax increase from $80 to $95 per tonne takes effect. The bill also proposes to repeal a sunset clause set to take effect on December 20, 2024, keeping the provincial exemption intact.

“Our government will keep fighting until the carbon tax is removed everywhere, on everything, for everyone,” Harrison stated, responding to the federal government’s decision to exempt home heating oil in Atlantic Canada.
