Toronto revamps vacant home tax program after mistaken charges
Toronto has announced significant updates to its Vacant Home Tax (VHT) program following widespread errors that resulted in over 160,000 homeowners receiving incorrect tax bills. Many of these residents were mistakenly charged despite living in their homes, prompting a backlash and a lengthy refund process for more than 100,000 charges from the 2023 tax year.
In response, the city has extended the declaration period to November 1, 2024, through April 30, 2025, and introduced a user-friendly online portal for easier submissions. The city will also enhance communication by providing confirmation via email, phone, and print, while opening a dedicated customer care center for assistance.
Councillor Jamaal Myers emphasized the need for a more efficient identification process using utility data, arguing it could reduce the burden on residents. The next bill mailout is scheduled for June 1, 2025.
