US law could save kids in Canada

New US safety regulations for dressers could have a positive impact on child safety in Canada. The STURDY Act, which came into effect in September 2023, mandates stricter tip-over prevention measures for manufacturers.

While Canada has no similar law, dressers made in Canada for export to the US must comply with the Act.  Consumer Reports testing shows that dressers manufactured after September 2023 pass rigorous tip-over tests, while some older models still fail.

Consumers are advised to check manufacturing dates and consider using anchor kits to secure furniture to walls.
